Creation of this outdoor music venue began with the conversion of a 1940’s distillery barrel house into a highly sought after mixed-use development. In the shadow of the adjacent tower, a concrete water processing tank was converted into a stage with the downbeat for music anticipated soon.
As a part of the adaptive reuse of the Pepper Distillery Rickhouse, we chose to value, preserve, and extend the original industrial aesthetic with white washed wood accents and matte sealing of the existing concrete floors. Concrete bartops with steel support detailing, and translucent “garage door” windows furthered the theme. An illuminated shelving motif (inspired by the flattened, horizontal espalier apple tree) provides the space with a focal point through placement on axis with the main entry and by using one of the concrete columns as it’s ‘trunk’. The ‘branch’ shelves are lit from behind to illuminate the golden cider ‘apples’ on display.
